For years, success in survivor services has been measured in numbers—but do they truly reflect the reality of healing and progress? The Journal of Applied Social Science has published a new study by Ethan Levine, Research & Evaluation Manager at Cast, in collaboration with David Smith of Mercy Lab Foundation, challenging traditional ways of measuring the impact of services.

The number of services received doesn’t capture the full picture of a survivor’s journey. This study shifts the focus to what truly matters—tracking emotional well-being, medical care, housing stability, and social support to understand real, meaningful progress.

Survivor services shouldn’t be about checking boxes—they should be about transforming lives.
